How Seat Allotment Works?

The allotment of schools in OFSS is governed by a blend of merit rank, student preference order, vacancy in schools/streams, and slide-up / reallocation rules. Below is a breakdown, with “you test this” prompts to keep it interactive.

  • The system first ranks all applicants based on Class 10 (matriculation) marks, applying any tie-breaker rules.
  • Only students who meet minimum eligibility (passing 10th, board recognized) can be ranked.

Preference List (Common Application Form, CAF):

  • When applying, students must list their preferred schools (or colleges), streams, and districts in a prioritised order (e.g. their most desired school first).
  • You can list up to 20 preferences. If your top choice is unavailable, the algorithm considers your next option.

According to the BSEB circular:

“principals or nodal officers of government-run 10+2 residential schools … must ensure that all details related to admitted students are updated on the OFSS portal …”

School & Stream Vacancy Constraints:

  • Each school has a fixed number of seats per stream (Arts, Science, Commerce, Agriculture, vocational, etc.).
  • The system tracks current fill status; once a stream in a school is filled, no further students can be assigned there.
  • “Seat availability lists” are published so students can see which schools still have openings.

Round-By-Round Allotment & Slide-Up:

  • The allotment happens in multiple rounds (First, Second, Third, and possibly Spot / Re-allotment) to give flexibility and fill leftover seats.
  • In later rounds, students who have already been allotted can “slide up” (i.e. be considered for a higher preference) if vacancies open in more desired schools.
  • If a student is upgraded (gets allotted to a more preferred school/stream), the earlier allotment is cancelled automatically.

Confirmation, Rejection & Forfeiture:

  • Once you are allotted to a round, you must accept (confirm) by completing document verification and fee payment. If you don’t, the seat may be forfeited and returned to the pool.
  • If you get no allotment in a round, you remain in contention for further rounds until the final.
  • The final seat you hold is whichever allotment you accepted last (or if no slide-up, the first one).

From media coverage of deadlines and allotment:

“Students who fail to confirm admission within the deadline will lose their allotted seats, which will be declared vacant and removed from the OFSS portal.”

FAQs

When are the merit lists and allotment rounds released?

In early June, the first selection list came in past cycles, with the succeeding rounds in mid-July. The OFSS portal will publish a schedule for 2026.

What is the “Slide-Up” option?

The option of slide up is considered to be of higher preference school or stream in later rounds, even after it gets accepted and an earlier allotment. In case you move out of your old allotment, it will be cancelled.

Can I change preferences after submitting the form?

In most cases, final preferences can’t be edited after submission. But in some rounds (if OFSS allows), you may modify or resubmit options if you weren’t allotted before.

What happens if I don’t confirm a seat in time?

If the seat does not get confirmed, it will be cancelled, and then the vacancy re-enters the pool for the next round.

How are tie-in marks broken?

The internal tie-breaker rules utilise systems such as the older date of birth and higher marks in certain subjects. BSEB/OFSS defines the exact tie-breaker criteria.
